Dumbstruck

servermonkey: (Crow la la la)
This waiting that I'm currently going through just seems SO long.

It's akin to feeling like a child does before say, Christmas morn'. Probably not quite as full of wonder, but it was the first thing I thought of.

So, Google has a Google Apps for Education program. What does this mean? Well, for one, we've been wanting to get our student users off our mail system and not have to deal with that kind of user base to manage--plus we'll only want to have Faculty and Staff using Exchange in the future. Altogether, I believe we're near 3500 users (I shudder to think what the Verisign fees would be for that large a number of users). Granted, that is not a lot when compared to say, a state university, or heck even some larger private universities as well.

In any case, while I do like Windows Live a little bit I don't want to have to use the Live mail client. I'd like to be able to select the one I like, you know? So, Google Apps for Education could be a great way to go. No final decision has been made yet, there's testing, proposals, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera to go through, but it's nice to know that could be a possible solution.

From the presentation I sat in on, migration of 95,000 65,000 users on ASU's system took about two weeks, pretty good. What that means though, and according to the the presenters, a system with 3500 users could be migrated in say days, perhaps even hours. To which I say, nifty! A very hearty nifty, too.

I you Google.

While it wasn't a Patrick Swayze Christmas at the Road House, we did have TONS of food and plenty left over as well.

Our Printing Services and ITS divisions were just about all in attendance for our annual Christmas potluck. We set my iPod to play holiday songs (oddly enough, a lot of Gloria Estefan versions of songs were played) and sat down to enjoy our meal. I found it interesting that I only had 71 songs tagged as Holiday.

Now experiencing mid-afternoon lull in activity. Must stay awake.

After a few days of trying different flavors of Linux, and other OS types thrown in for grins and giggles--Ubuntu, Freespire, MEPIS, DSL, SLAX (Kill Bill edition), E/OS, and ReactOS to name a few--I've FINALLY got Freespire 1.0.13 running at home AND gotten wireless to run as well. Ubuntu was nice and easy to install, but I couldn't get the wireless going for anything. So, on my bosses suggestion, I tried out Freespire. I had actually been running it, but was never able to get my wireless to run correctly, despite setting ESSID and key information properly. The info would never stick even though it could detect my network as well as my neighbor's open network. So I started trying other OS flavors out and ended up hosing Freespire on my box. I blame ReactOS--as it failed when trying to install itself.

So, I thought a bit and went with Freespire again. The main thing I did differently was having the OS detect before its first boot and then it eventually set everything, save for video, up. After about two hours of tinkering, I was online and looking at my screen set at 1024 x 768 resolution--it was only displaying 640 x 350 previously, which cut off a lot of Control Center windows and was not at all easy on the eyes.

Because I mentioned to Adam that I was in the middle of working on two towers, I ended up deciding on Isengard as the PC name. Can't wait to get another box to name it Barad-Dûr. Yup. Hey, no making fun of the Linux n00b, alright? You're glad to have this kind of exciting posting again, aren't you?

Awesome

servermonkey: (Brian Peanut Butter Jelly)
terranoelle14Terra just handed MST3K: Time Chasers to me. I had just been reading about that one yesterday or the day before and realized that I've only seen bits and pieces of it when it was aired on SciFi.

I WILL be watching it tonight unless something comes up, of course.

Oh yeah.
servermonkey: (Chris Ware bot)
It's so odd (to me) that one can import a blog into their Facebook. Thankfully, private entries don't seem to be imported, well at least they don't seem to be.

Is anyone else using this feature? Does anyone else care about it?

Snagged MST3K: Werewolf last night and queued up MST3K: Gamera vs. Barugon this afternoon before coming back to work from lunch. Next, getting the AVIs into DVD format. From what I've read and mineral777Adam's counsel, this can be done fairly painlessly. Still left to see as I haven't bought any blank DVDs yet.

Managed to get someone else addicted to KoL this week, and it was a good thing. Also finished my ninth ascension with my main character and am only missing a couple of the top level bankable skills to make my HC runs quicker (though I've been happy with finishing my most recent one in 14 days).

Poor Jonothan has brochitis and I'll have to have his script filled a bit later. He seems alright considering he had a temperature last night. Rachel took a 1/2 day off and planned to have tomorrow off, just in case. While he seems a bit more sensitive than usual, he's mostly his jovial self. Mostly.

Also managed to clog up my kitchen drain but good last night. Stupid me didn't rinse the drippings from dinner and as such all outward access was denied. Some Drano, a plunger and about forty minutes of work got the clog gone but I poured a more Drano in for good measure. I'll have to remember NOT to do that again.

Huh...

Have I gotten too busy and neglected this LJ again?

Yeah. I have.

Finally did close on our house on the 21st of last month. Took a week off after that, since I had the days and we would save some money on day care costs if we started Abby and Jon this week instead of last week.

Abby seems to like her new school, though I don't think Jon likes being dropped off. He screamed yesterday morning, and while it was my first instinct to stay for a bit longer but I had to get going to work, so I did not. Same thing today, though he didn't scream he just cried a bit. Not my favorite part of day care, let me say that.

Have been doing a bit more cooking to save a bit on the budget, made three peach pound cakes in the last couple of weeks. All turned out well, however, I accidentally used 1/2 cup of butter instead of a full cup of butter for my first cake. So, it tasted good, just a bit different. Tasted much better with the full cup in. Richer, obviously. Failed miserably with the peach cobbler recipe I had. It was okay, just not really what I liked. We're going to try with Rachel's mom's cobbler recipe and see if I like that better. I'm planning on making some pseudo-fried rice tonight as I'd like to try out a recipe I found for White/Shrimp sauce...though I think it's a bit strong. The rice vinegar and garlic powder scent that emanated from it was quite powerful. I've done fried rice (sort of) before, and it was edible, so I'll try it again. Last week, made Alton Brown's stove top macaroni and cheese for the kids. They loved the stuff, so I'll have to make it again sometime. Also made some bow ties with Alfredo sauce...wouldn't mind making that again sometime--and I STILL need to dig up a chicken Diane recipe since I've been thinking about that for some time now.

Okay...so now I'm hungry.

SDK!

servermonkey: (Daemon process)
So I've long been looking for a way to get rid of all the dead tracks in my iTunes library (sad, but true) for a while now and ended up discovering the iTunes COM Windows SDK, which one person used to do this.

Amusing to say the least, though I wish I'd found that SDK long before today.

I must sadly admit that my list is not ABBA free.

Poor Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, they were mostly remembered for either What I Am or Circle. Mostly.

They had a few other songs that were worth listening to, especially the playful minute and a half that was Oak Cliff Bra.

So, I'll have to remember this song come Friday...if I get around to posting music again.

So we did the Bertie Bott's jellybeans thing again.

This time I wasn't nearly as fortunate, I got sardine and earthworm! BLECH!

At least I fared better than our one student worker who got a vomit flavored one. Ew.
servermonkey: (Warlock smiling)
We're standing around sharing a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans to see what nasty flavors we got.

The worst ones I got were earwax and black pepper, both of which weren't as bad as I thought they'd be.

w00t!

I'm so glad I've gotten these 554 Spam-Relay error messages figured out.

Now I can get back to my other work.

How odd.

servermonkey: (Bert)
Mark (my boss) printed out bracket sheets for all of us to fill out and post. Just for fun, no money involved or anything.

I filled mine out fairly randomly, going by standing and how much of the particular team can be associated with the number three. Really. I hardly follow sports, yet have managed to get all my picks correct (so far).

My picks...have been right? So ODD. I'm trying to find a way to post them.

EDIT - I picked Pacific over Boston College...and BC won. In second OT. Oh well, that I got any right is still surprising to me.

Good trade

servermonkey: (Isz)
In case I don't sing mineral777Adam's praises enough...

He and I just traded Tostito's and cheese dip for thin mints. I SO needed those thin mints.

Renuzit

Brisa Del Paraíso...while it's no paradise in our men's room, it's certainly a bit better than it has been.

People still have not learned to flush, though.

It's a difficult task, the flushing thing. My four year old forgets sometimes.

But, she's four, and we constantly remind her when she does forget.

I don't know what someone's microwaving nearby, but it smells very much like urine.

Ugh.

Uh...EW

servermonkey: (Pet Shop Boys Very)
What's this in my mouth? EW! One of my stitches just came out. Pretty gross.

Other than that, today has been pretty good, despite the volume of work to be done. Teacher Ed brought chocolate cake over yesterday--of which there was still lots left of. There was a smallish birthday get together for a student worker. Danishes, root beer and cream sodas all around. During the thing, though I ripped out part of one of my belt loops in my jeans. Bummer, to say the least, but these jeans have been with me for quite some time now.

We have a lunch time office meeting, but we're getting pizza from a mom and pop place--a good one--and it should be a light meeting, unlike my two hour LiveMeeting yesterday. Whew. Much TOO long, that one was.

Lastly, happy birthday to wolflady26Sandra!

Forgot to mention that one morning this week that someone must have given one of the many squirrels around here a very large chocolate chip cookie. All I could see when looking at the thing was the cookie and then two little furry paws holding it and then the little squirrel head peeping up to take small bites of cookie. He wasn't at all bothered by my walking near it, though I wondered if it might have thought that I might try taking its cookie.

I didn't.

This morning, Mark (our department head) and I were walking up the stairs to our offices and noticed some writing on the sidewalk. Written in pastel yellow chalk was, "You're Beatiful." Perhaps it was an inebriated homage to James Blunt?

Not a very good one, though. At least the you're part wasn't your.

So, perhaps the LJ blocking done by our filter was some sort of error? I only say that since I'm now able to log in and actually get to my friends page, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Glad for it, but keep thinking it'll go away again. We'll see, I suppose.

So, have made an appointment to have my teeth extracted. Next Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Could have had it done this morning at 9:30 a.m. but didn't think that short of a notice would go over too well (it didn't actually). The thing is that I've not spoken to anyone that's had teeth extracted and NOT had a tough time with it. Would it be possible to will myself to be better faster? With any hope, that will be what happens.

Brought in some cake to share with the co-workers and could only think to label it: "Eat and be merry." Last week, I labeled the snacks brought in: "To serve man." I don't think anyone really got it. Same thing with the "Share and enjoy" label I made for something else.

Apparently, we bring a LOT of stuff to eat to our office.

Oh, and iTunes, you're so funny, playing Dr. Feelgood whilst I write an entry on tooth extractions. Hmmm.

Huh...we're under a tornado watch until 3:00 p.m. this afternoon?

Weird.

Wearing
Short sleeved button up shirt, jeans and brown Adidas shoes. Typical of what I wear.

Reading
Darwin Awards III, a book about screenwriting (not sure why I picked that one up), and am going to dive into The Portable Dorothy Parker soon.

Writing
A list of Nextel devices by department

Planning
Retrieval of all the previously mentioned Nextel devices that our employer will no longer be paying service for . Should be a very enjoyable Friday experience--and by enjoyable, I mean the absolute furthest thing from enjoyable as possible.
