I was picking up a copy of Call of the Mall (by Paco Underhill, who wrote Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping), and Wicked when I overheard a short exchange between a patron and two of the reference desk staff.

"I'm looking for the History of the U.S."

Puzzled look, and then, "Do you have a specific title or author that you were looking. . ."

"That's all he said, THE U.S. History book," the woman interjected.

The two ladies at the counter then proceeded to patiently try and figure out which book could possibly be the right one. In the meantime, they allowed Mrs. or Ms. Book Searcher to use the phone to call and see which book was being searched for--I wanted to stay and see what came of this situation. I wanted to know if it was the lady's son or professor and what was being searched for.

Didn't have time, though.

But surely, the library would have THE U.S. History book, in large print, even.

Or, a Schoolhouse Rock version?

I keep thinking about a song that's about manifest destiny.
