Cutting teeth, sinful and other stuff
Poor Jonothan had a LONG weekend. He, unlike his sister, has had a tough time cutting teeth. He always gets an elevated temperature, a very runny nose, and is generally unhappy about the whole process. Can't say I blame the poor child.
Ended up staying at home with him and Abby yesterday. All three of us slept in while Rachel got up and ready for work. Abby, amazingly enough, slept until about 8:00 or 8:30. Jonothan, on the other hand, didn't wake until 10:00 or so. For a bit, I was worried, but the boy was just worn out. That he wanted to play and get to the VCR stereo and anything else that he shouldn't get in the entertainment center was a good sign that he was starting to feel better.
A professor and I decided we should blow Friday afternoon off, and went off to see Sin City. It was SO worth it. Visually stunning, and very true to what little I remember from the graphic novels (my brother-in-law Samuel is currently borrowing the ones I have, and I've borrowed his Epic/Marvel Comics run of Elfquest). Three people walked out at a couple of different points in the movie--but really, this isn't a movie for the over 65 crowd, well, not the typical over 65 movie going crowd, that is. They chose to leave in the middle of Marv's story, and the last eloper left during the resolution of the That Yellow Bastard storyline. It was pretty brutal and, while reminiscent of the horrifying bar scene in Irreversible, the colors at least reminded me it was a cartoonish type of brutality. I do have to point out that when I first saw Nick Stahl in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, I was disappointed in a major way. I didn't buy him as John Connor. My opinion swayed a bit after seeing him play Bobby Kent in Bully. Miscast? Yes, as the real life Bobby Kent was of Iranian descent. But he played him well. Very nasty. Initially unsure about his portrayal of Junior/That Yellow Bastard, all of my doubts were taken away once seeing him on screen in make-up.
At one point, and the comment was amusing enough for me to share, Critch leaned over and said, "Frodo must have kept the Ring." Indeed. Whew, Elijah Wood.
Sadly, my least favorite person in the whole thing was Alexis Bledel. Seemed like she was missing out as far as stuff to do. Still, not altogether bad, really. I jokingly said that I felt a bit dirty after watching Sin City, but really I did. Go see it, unless it's not your sort of bag.
Having a day off allowed me to clear off some space on the ol' TiVo--which I still haven't named. Got through just about all the Sliders episodes on there (what a gyp of a series ender), a couple of episodes of The Shield (which I'm just not getting into), and some Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes. Haven't seen Blade Runner with the shoddy Harrison Ford narration in quite some time, so got through a bit of that as well. That Abby took a decent nap helped with this.
So, back to work. . .
