At the library. . .

I was picking up a copy of Call of the Mall (by Paco Underhill, who wrote Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping), and Wicked when I overheard a short exchange between a patron and two of the reference desk staff.

"I'm looking for the History of the U.S."

Puzzled look, and then, "Do you have a specific title or author that you were looking. . ."

"That's all he said, THE U.S. History book," the woman interjected.

The two ladies at the counter then proceeded to patiently try and figure out which book could possibly be the right one. In the meantime, they allowed Mrs. or Ms. Book Searcher to use the phone to call and see which book was being searched for--I wanted to stay and see what came of this situation. I wanted to know if it was the lady's son or professor and what was being searched for.

Didn't have time, though.

I hate stupid people there are thousand of "the US history" books out there and there is not just one and if there was it would be freaking huge

But surely, the library would have THE U.S. History book, in large print, even.

and using story book characters to tell the story in a nice clean and happy view of history

Or, a Schoolhouse Rock version?

I keep thinking about a song that's about manifest destiny.

I read about Call of the Mall in the Post recently. Any good? Do I need to know why I buy or can I be merely content to spend away naively?

So far, I've only read the introduction and up through page nine. I only put it down out of sheer exhaustion last night. It's definitely piqued my curiosity, if you're curious, you should get your mom to grab it/check it out and Why We Buy for you.

Or, remain happy in your consumerism. If you enjoy it, no need to explore it beyond that. Rachel prefers Shopaholic to Paco's books, so. :)
