Take a few of my geek points away

I am only now getting around to The Colour of Magic and have never read a single page of the Discworld books.

I have owned The Fifth Elephant for a while now, but really want to begin at the beginning.

Or does it not matter as much with some of the story arcs?

I really enjoyed Good Omens a long while back and have been meaning to pick that one up again sometime.

Have you seen any of the BBC adaptations?

Huh

As Mr. Pratchett himself says, it is recommended, but not needed. What you will "miss", if you can call it that, is characterization. Such as Sam Vimes alcoholism, his rise in rank, and such on like that. Rincewind has the least amount of needed back-story, Vimes and crew the most, and the Witches are in the middle, plus there are a few stand alone books. Really when you go to the bookstore, just go in that order and you'll be fine even if you miss a book or two.
