The Scarlet Letter, viewers were surprised that the film depicted her being rescued from the Puritans by Indians, then ending with a happy love affair. But Demi was unconcerned with the film's rather large poetic license because "not many people have read the book." Except, of course, for just about everyone who ever went to high school, since the novel had been required reading for decades.
